Our Commitment to Sustainability For more than 60 years Blount Seafood Corp. has been focused on the ocean environment for its livelihood and believes strongly in sustaining all natural resources for generations to come. Our efforts include:
Blount's Commitment to Our Oceans and Fish
- Sea clams and ocean clams are managed by one of the most successful federal ITQ (individual transferable quota) that is based completely on a sustainable science model. It is touted as the management method of choice for sustainability.
- Blount Seafood helps raise and contributes more than $100,000 annually to be used for shellfish science to promote sustainability with the NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Service).
- Blount Seafood vice president, George Richardson, has served as industry member on the NMFS Regional Council that oversees the quota setting process.
- Blount Seafood vice president, Steve Blount, serves as chairman of the NFI (National Fisheries Institute) Clam Committee that focuses on sustainability.
- Blount Seafood is a charter member of Ocean Trust, an Ocean conservation trust (http://www.oceantrust.org/).
- Blount Seafood has hosted several sustainable aquaculture conferences at our site, as well as secured sea grant funds for oyster restoration in Narragansett Bay, RI. Blount Seafood has also been involved in developing the aquaculture programs at both the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI.
Blount's Commitment to Our Environment
- Blount developed and uses a state-of-the-art post production water filtration system that is extremely eco-friendly. In our Warren, RI, seafood plant we use a combination of natural heating and cooling to separate water and solids. In our Fall River, MA, soup plant we also employ the use of a series of biological reactors, which is another significant eco-friendly system. (http://www.bioprocess.info/)
- Blount supports the Rhode Island Audubon Society. We sponsor Earth Day activities as well as run a
tent sale for the community offering our products at a discount with all proceeds benefiting the Rhode Island Audubon Society. - Energy conservation is a major corporate priority and Blount green energy programs, including state-of-the-art (three phase) electrical demand balancing capacitor banks and high-efficiency lighting, have contributed to reduce electrical energy usage by 185,000 kwh annually. These two programs alone reduce more than 294,000 lbs of carbon dioxide each year.
- Blount was awarded a Design 2000 Electricity Savings grant by National Grid for the design and installation of its energy saving refrigeration compressors and lights in its Fall River facility.
- Blount makes efforts to recycle raw material packaging where possible, and uses finished cardboard packaging made from 35-100% recycled material. During this past year, Blount recycled more than 100 tons of cardboard.
- Blount is one of the leading organic waste recyclers in New England and last year converted more than 3,500 tons of organic material into compost and premium landscape materials, which otherwise might have been landfill solid waste.
Blount's Commitment to Our People
- Our most critical and long-term efforts are with the people of Blount Seafood. By providing thousands of hours of training each year, we better ourselves as a team, which helps us think smarter and create a more efficient process, benefiting both the company and the environment. As a company we are aware that our strength is in the hands and minds of our team. To that end we support training and education, from a GED to a master's program, each employee is supported in their growth as an individual and team member.
- Our commitment to our employees extends beyond education to include their families and their volunteer efforts. Blount supports an EAP program that is available to family members and sponsors a number of Blount family events annually. We also support our employees' community service efforts by providing paid time off for volunteer work and making contributions to charitable organizations that our employees support.
Blount's Commitment to Our Community
- We are committed to giving back to our community. We donate approximately two percent of our profits each year. We achieve this by donating products and funds to a diverse group of local food pantries, youth organizations, religious organizations, Audubon Society, scholarships, Heart Association, MS, blood drives…just to name a few.
Sincerely,

Todd Blount President
