Blount chowders go retail - December 2, 2003East Bay NewspapersUsed to be you had to go to a restaurant to sample those soups and chowders cooked up by Blount Seafood. No longer. The Warren company announced last week that it is going retail and will sell some of its soups in grocery stores. First to be introduced are three varieties of Blount's "Signature Soups" -- New England Clam Chowder, Gourmet Lobster Bisque and Southwest Shrimp & Corn. Once these three are established, Blount plans to expand its line with other offerings. "We regard this launch as a significant expansion for Blount Seafood into the retail category," said Todd Blount, third-generation president of Blount Seafood. The company's headquarters and plant are located on Water Street in Warren. Many of the sea clams for these chowders are unloaded there from the decks of the oceangoing clammer, Wando River. The 50-year-old, family-owned-and-operated Blount Seafood also recently announced a $10-million renovation for a new plant located in Fall River. Blount Seafood traces its roots to 1880, when Eddie B. Blount began harvesting and shucking shellfish on the Warren waterfront. Blount's product line includes sea clam meat, mussels, calamari, New Zealand Littleneck Clams, crab cakes, dips, chowders, soups and sauces. Article courtesy of East Bay Newspapers. |
